This sample comes from Protivin, Iowa, a largely Czech-American community in northeastern Iowa. The embroidery patterns in the sampler are commonly found in different textiles, as well as kroje, which are traditional Czech and Slovak folk costumes. Samplers are utilized to display a wide variety of different stitching patterns, and are found in many different cultures.
